Nevada Right to Life Political Action Committee ("NVRTL PAC") actively supports candidates for federal office who will work to further the goals of the pro-life movement. LIFEPAC is the state political action committee of Nevada Right to Life and seeks to elect candidates to state office that respect the sanctity of human life. An important component of this assistance is educating candidates, the public, and the press so that myths about the abortion issue and the electoral process can be dispelled.
NVRTL PAC is convinced that it is a distinct advantage for candidates to be pro-life. In fact, in every major election since 1980, pro-life candidates have fared better than have pro-abortion candidates among those voters who base their vote on a candidate’s position on abortion.
According to a poll conducted by the polling company TM inc., pro-life candidates enjoyed a definite advantage in the November 2008 elections. Five percent of voters said that abortion was the most important issue affecting their vote and 90% of these (4.5% of the entire population) voted for McCain while only 10% (one-half percent of the entire population) voted for Obama. This means "single-issue" abortion voters provided McCain a net gain of 4%.
Pro-life candidates benefit because the American people are pro-life; the majority of the country is opposed to the vast majority of abortions. According to a November 2008 poll by the polling company TM inc., fully 53 percent of voters were opposed to abortion except in very rare circumstances.
As NVRTL PAC looks to 2010, one thing is certain: Just as the 2008 elections have had serious consequences for the pro-life movement, so will the Congressional midterm elections this year. The Congress will consider various legislation concerning issues pro-life people everywhere hold dear. Of particular concern is the threat of the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" – a law that goes beyond Roe v. Wade and would invalidate virtually all state and federal limits on abortion and would make partial birth abortion legal again. President Obama has said he would sign this legislation if it reaches his desk. President Obama has said he would also nominate pro-abortion Supreme Court justices, and followed through with that threat by nominating Justice Sotomayor.
The 2010 elections give NVRTL PAC another opportunity to persevere for those who cannot speak for themselves—to strengthen pro-life support in the House and Senate against the Obama abortion agenda, so that we can continue forward with the goal of protecting the most vulnerable.
Many in the media would have us believe that, after Obama’s win in 2008, pro-life Americans are fewer or are less motivated. We know they are wrong on both counts.
We know that under Roe, since 1973 more than fifty million defenseless babies have been aborted—more than 3,300 each day, 365 days a year. We must not remain silent nor indifferent to their first right—their right to life.We know that when we stay home on Election Day, babies die. We must redouble our efforts and continue working until every unborn child is protected.
Both NVRTL PAC and LIFEPAC are nonpartisan and their funds are separate from each other and from Nevada Right to Life.
